A short history
In 2002 the Autologous Transfusion Workgroup (ATW), attached to University Hospitals
Leicester's Hospital Transfusion Committee commissioned the development of an online
learning and assessment programme on Intra-operative Cell Salvage. A senior anaesthetist
in the Trust identified the need for background education in blood conservation
techniques for nurses and anaesthetists, prior to their practical training in cell
salvage. As a member of ATW, Laurence Wilson had online learning development skills and
experience.
By 2005 the development of the course had been assimilated into Trent Transfusion
Alternatives Group (TTAG). The project aimed to pilot the programme in hospitals
throughout the Trent region before recommending its availability nationwide. The pilot programme
was named TACTICS - Training, Assessment and Competency in Trent
Intra-operative Cell Salvage
In 2006 the UK Blood Services assumed responsibility for the continuing
development of the programme by means of an Editorial Board.
