NPSA SPN 14: implementation toolkit

The NPSA Safer Practice Notice (SPN) number 14, Right patient right blood details action to
be taken by all health care organisations responsible for administering blood transfusions with
the aim of improving the safety of transfusions. The SPN requests that organisations:

  • agree and implement a plan for competency based training and assessments
  • ensure the compatibility form is not used as part of the bedside check
  • examine methods of identification including electronic, photo identification cards, and
    a separate labelling system.

This toolkit aims to assist in the implementation of competency based training and assessments. Suggestions and examples of how to comply with the requirements of the SPN, are included but these have not been endorsed at a national level and their suitability will need to be assessed locally.
