Policies

Yorkshire & The Humber RTC supported a working group of transfusion practitioners in developing nurse authorisation for blood component transfusion for the region and ensured that clinical governance issues were covered to protect practitioners and patients. These templates and documents were produced:

A template for nurse authorisation framework for blood component transfusion for clinical haematology (Word doc 220KB)

The authorisation of blood components workbook (pdf 776KB)

The authorisation of blood components: questions and answers (pdf 100KB)

Template for a portfolio of evidence and competency to support non-medical staff clinical decision making and providing written instruction for blood component transfusion in a haematology setting (Word doc 132KB)

Template for an assessment tool for transfusion dependent patients (Word doc 1MB)

These templates refer to haematology patients and staff but may be amended to reflect other clinical specialities. The responsibility for any amendments rests with the individual organisation.

The following documents are examples from different organisations.

Advance nurse practitioners making the clinical decisions and providing written instruction for blood component transfusion policy  (pdf 64KB) Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Dec 2012
and

Following a Yorkshire and the Humber regional review of the National Comparative Audit of Bedside Transfusion Practice by a small working group a poster was developed highlighting the key action points from the recently updated British Committee for Standards in Haematology Guidelines for the Administration of Blood Components 2010 (table 1). It is hoped this will be useful in clinical areas to promote best transfusion practice in accordance with BCSH guidelines. Please download and print for use in your organisation.
