FOCUS trial results

The FOCUS trial studied transfusion triggers in patients aged over 50, who either had cardiovascular disease, or had risk factors for cardiovascular disease, and who were undergoing surgical hip fracture repair. It has shown that a restrictive transfusion threshold (symptoms of anaemia or at physician discretion when the Hb was < 8 g/dL) was at least equivalent to a liberal threshold (Hb <10 g/dL) in outcomes such as death, ability to walk at 60 days, and other in-hospital complications.
