Promoting Better Blood Transfusion - Presentation

This PowerPoint presentation may be useful in promoting Better Blood Transfusion within an organisation. The presentation has been adapted (with permission) from a presentation by Dr Shubha Allard, Consultant Haematologist Barts and the London NHS Trust and NHS Blood and Transplant.

National Blood Transfusion Committee

The Chief Medical Officer’s National Blood Transfusion Committee (NBTC) provides national support and advice on Better Blood Transfusion initiatives. The NBTC and Regional Transfusion Committees (RTCs) provide a framework to channel information and advice to hospitals and their transfusion committees on best transfusion practice. Terms of reference and minutes from the NBTC are available in the National Blood Transfusion Committee section of this website.

Better Blood Transfusion Action Plan

This framework can be used for monitoring progress with the actions in Health Service Circular (HSC 2007/001) Better Blood Transfusion - Safe and Appropriate Use of Blood. Hospital Transfusion Teams and Committees may find this tool particularly useful.

Survey on 'Better Blood Transfusion' implementation

In 2003 and 2004, questionnaire surveys on the implementation of the Health Services Circular 2002/009 'Better Blood Transfusion' were conducted by the National Blood Service on behalf of the National Blood Transfusion Committee.

For results of these surveys please refer to the following publication:

Murphy MF, Howell C.
Survey of the implementation of the recommendations in the Health Service Circular 2002/009 'Better Blood Transfusion' on behalf of the National Blood Transfusion Committee.
Transfusion Medicine. 2005; 15: 453-460.

The questionnaire survey was repeated in December 2006.

Promoting Better Blood Transfusion in Scotland

NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (NHS QIS) was established by the Scottish Parliament in 2003 to take the lead in improving the quality of care and treatment delivered by NHS Scotland. Read more about NHS QIS on their website: www.nhshealthquality.org/nhsqis/

NHS QIS published standards for blood transfusion in September 2006. A pdf of the standards can be downloaded here: Clinical Standards - blood transfusion. NHS QIS use these standards as the basis for peer review of blood transfusion services in Scotland.
